Courage - 2017
Paper cut - 25” x 75”
Everyone has an inner dialog. It can be positive, but at times i t can l imit your ability to take risks or speak out of fear of private and/or public shunning. That voice may tell you that you are not good enough or strong enough, that “it was your fault - your shame”, and you should fear anything beyond the boundaries set by family and society. It takes great courage to upset the status quo by describing the nature of betrayal. It takes courage to make a stand after having been j udged and punished for things that have been done to you. This death by 1000 paper cuts i s my response to the “Me Too” movement. It i s the first from a series of papercuts I am presently working on which describe my own experiences with the primary and secondary trauma. In this piece I am naked and exposed grabbing hold of the courage to speak up against my perpetrator, knowing I would be dragged through the mud.
